An onyxis occurs when one or each side of the toenail

Most frequently on the large toe — grow into the encompassing skin. If the nail curls and pierces the skin, the tissues become swollen, red and tender.

Signs of an ingrowing toenail include:
  • Pain when pressure is placed on the toe
  • Skin growing over the nail
  • Redness, swelling or bleeding
  • In addition, a white or yellow discharge from the toe may indicate an infection. this could be treated at once .

Surgical options

In cases where more conservative treatment isn’t working, nail surgery are often an efficient alternative.

The two options are Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA), removing a part of the nail, and Total Nail Avulsion (TNA), removing the entire nail. The latter could also be necessary if the nail is thick or diseased and is pressing into the skin surrounding your toe. you’ll have an indentation where the nail wont to be, but it’s perfectly safe for you to not have a toenail.

What the procedure involves

Surgery will only be recommended if our thorough assessment indicates it’s the simplest option. an area anaesthetic is given so as to form the procedure as painless as possible. The side, sides or whole nail, are then removed. A chemical called phenol is applied to stop the nail regrowing, the toe is then wrapped during a sterile dressing. A follow-up appointment are going to be made, during which further care and advice is given. The PNA or TNA procedure is administered by our trained podiatrists.
